Double Whammy? UConn trounced in Fiesta Bowl; is Edsall going to Maryland?

Yesterday the UConn Huskies were trounced by Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl, losing by a score of 48-20, in a game that probably wasn’t even as competitive as the score seems to indicate.

On the one hand, two of Oklahoma’s touchdowns were fluke interception returns off of bobble passes; on the other hand, two of UConn’s touchdowns were off of an interception return and a kickoff – the offense never made it into the end zone.

The Huskies seemed to be using the same defensive strategy that the New York Giants have seemed to use in the last couple of games – tire out the opposing offense by letting them run roughshod.  Aside from the interception return for a touchdown that closed the gap to 14-7, the Huskies defense really didn’t seem to do much.

Today comes word that Randy Edsall may have accepted the head coaching position at the University of Maryland, replacing Ralph Friedgen, who was ousted at the end of the season.  It seems like a better fit to me than the previous rumor which had Edsall heading the University of Miami.  UConn Athletic Director Jeff Hathaway is denying the rumors, but reports are that Edsall didn’t fly back with the team last night, but instead flew to College Park to meeting with Maryland officials.

I have to admit that this one caught me by surprise – I had heard that former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach was the front runner, after heir apparent Kevin Franklin became the head coach at Vanderbilt.

Personally, I hope that the rumors turn out to just that, but it seems inevitable that Edsall is going to leave at some point.

The timing, though, is kind of funny – hire a guy after his team, referred to by some as the worst BCS bowl game participant ever – is trounced in that bowl game.  I happen to think he’s a very good coach, and if he’s able to recruit at Maryland could give that program a real boost.
