UConn Upsets #2 Michigan State, 70-67

The University of Connecticut Huskies upset the #2 ranked Michigan State Spartans last night by a final score of 70-67.  Kemba Walker again led the way for the Huskies with 30 points, just about his average for the season.  Alex Oriakhi scored 15 and pulled down 17 rebounds.  They were the only two double digit scorers for UConn, but Roscoe Smith and Shabazz Napier chimed in with 8 and 7 points respectively.

It wasn’t a great shooting night for the Huskies, shooting just over 40% for the game, 6 of 24 from beyond the arc, and only 14 of 24 from the free throw line.  The Huskies missed several key free throws down the stretch but managed to hold on for the win.

I certainly didn’t see this coming – I had the Huskies winning their first two games, then losing to Wichita State, beating Chaminade in what I assumed would be tonight’s loser’s bracket game, then losing tomorrow.

With so many freshmen, I’m not convinced that the Huskies will continue to enjoy this kind of success, but thus far they have exceeded my expectations.  Kemba Walker has been unbelievable, Alex Oriakhi has played pretty well (and was outstanding tonight) and the freshmen have been showing promise.  One area in which this team already seems better is taking care of the ball – they seem to be turning it over a lot less than last season, which is probably no surprise with the addition by subtraction of Jerome Dyson and Stanley Robinson.

I still think there are too many holes and the team is too dependent on streaky freshmen to earn a tournament berth, but it’s been fun to watch so far.

UConn moves on to face Kentucky tomorrow in the championship game, with Kentucky’s win last night over Washington.
