Justin Knox: Overhyped

Is it just me, or is the transfer of Justin Knox to North Carolina way overhyped?

I’m reading posts by fans suggesting that, with signing of Knox, North Carolina is back to being dominant.

You’re talking about a guy who averaged 5 points and 3.8 rebounds in 3 seasons at Alabama.  This season, he averaged 6.3 points and 3.7 rebounds per game, in about 20 minutes of playing time.  This is a 6’9″, 240 lb forward, averaging 3.7 rebounds in 20 minutes — and it was not on a great team, meaning that there should have been an opportunity to earn more minutes.  He will be a senior (actually, a grad student) so it’s not as if the Tar Heels can expect the big jump that players often achieve between their freshman and senior seasons.

Perhaps Knox will fit in better with North Carolina’s style of play.  But typically, Roy Williams wins because he accumulates the best talent, not because he brings in middle-of-the-road talent and coaches them up.  Yes, he won a National Championship two seasons ago, but that was with 8 McDonald’s All-Americans.  I just don’t see Justin Knox as the key player that returns this team to the Final Four.  They may yet get there, but Knox will not be the reason.  Frankly, I don’t see him as an improvement over the Wear twins, and I wasn’t all that impressed with them…
