Cleveland Melvin Commits to DePaul Blue Demons

Former UConn recruit Cleveland Melvin announced his commitment to DePaul early this afternoon, as posted on zagsblog.com.

Melvin had verbally committed to the Huskies during the early signing period in November, before reopening his recruitment in the spring.  He reportedly changed his mind because Jim Calhoun wanted him to play power forward, while Cleveland views himself as a small forward.

After deciding against UConn, Melvin’s profile increased when he announced that Duke had moved to the  top of his list.  The Blue Devils had made inquiries after Melvin reopened his recruitment, and Duke fans hit the message boards looking for information about him.  It appears that this was a bit of wishful thinking on his part, as Duke’s pursuit of Melvin never resulted in a scholarship offer.

More recently, Melvin’s list has included Marshall, DePaul, Rutgers and Seton Hall.  They were all fairly late entries on his list, perhaps not coincidentally because each of those programs has changed head coaches since the beginning of 2010.

Melvin is reportedly a very athletic player with a lot of upside.  I believe that he has a chance to become a very good player at DePaul — perhaps a better chance than he might have had at UConn, because I believe he will get more playing time than he would have at Connecticut.
